The Czech Lion extends the number of the awarded categories; altogether 93 films, miniseries and series are eligible for this edition

The Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA) introduces first information about the 32nd annual Czech Lion Awards. These prestigious film awards for the year of 2024 will be presented to the winners on 8th March 2025 in Rudolfinum in Prague and again the gala evening will be broadcast live by Czech Television on CT1 channel at 20:10. Altogether 93 works of art in 24 statutory categories advanced to the first round of voting by the academics. For the coming annual awards, the categories have been newly extended by categories for actors in series and miniseries. The nominations will be announced on 13th January 2025 and it will also be broadcast live by Czech Television.
The ceremonial gala evening in Rudolfinum in March will be hosted by Karel “Kovy” Kovář. And for the first time the programme will be creatively supervised by the director Matěj Chlupáček.
Since 1st December the academics from the ranks of respected film professionals have been assessing 41 feature actors’ films, 16 documentary features which had been chosen by the pre-selection committee consisting of the members of the academy from the total amount of 42 movies, 10 animated or puppet films and also 10 short films which had been chosen by a pre-selection committee consisting of academics from the total amount of 26 submitted movies. Furthermore, the academics are also assessing the 16 series and miniseries that have been premiered on TV screens or online platforms throughout this year and which had been submitted by the broadcasters/producers. So in the first round there is the total amount of 93 works of art that are being assessed by the academics. “For the purpose of the upcoming annual Czech Lion awards a couple of changes have been made in the list of the assessed categories. The television series and miniseries have been newly merged into one category and television films get assessed within the category of feature actors’ films. At the same time the acting categories have been extended, the acting performances in series and miniseries are newly assessed separately, in the leading roles as well as in the supporting roles for actresses as well as actors,” explains the executive director of CFTA Tereza Malá Rychnovská.
The new annual Czech Lion awards will be produced by a new creative team. The supervisor of the ceremonial gala evening will be the director and producer Matěj Chlupáček and the art concept of the stage in Rudolfinum will be signed by the scenographer, film architect, designer and conceptual artist Henrich Boráros. The live broadcast will be directed by Michael Čech. And the author of the visual graphic style of the 32nd Czech Lion is Jana Krchová.
The support of stable partners is essential for the presentation of the Czech Lion film awards. The general partner has been for a long time the mineral water Magnesia of the company Mattoni 1873. The main partner is innogy, which belongs to the significant supporters of the Czech cinematography. The main media parter is Czech Television. The other partners of the 32nd Czech Lion awards are Progresus, Cinestar, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Krušovice Bohém and the media partners are Czech Radio Radiožurnál, ČSFD.cz, iDnes.cz, Ledmultimedia, Respekt and Vogue CS.
