Czech Lion has revealed the nominations and the most successful were the films Brothers and We Have Never Been Modern

Monday, 15th January, 2024

The Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA) has today announced the nominations for the 31st Czech Lion annual awards. In the first round the academics have been choosing from altogether 86 movies including television works of art, all of which have been premiered in 2023. The total of 26 titles in 19 categories proceeded to the final competition for the statuette of the Czech Lion. The highest numbers of nominations have been proudly obtained by the films Brothers, We Have Never Been Modern, Restored Point, She Came at Night, Suppressed and Waltzing Matilda and also the television series Volga.

The ceremonial presentation of the Czech Lion Awards at the gala evening will take place on 9th March at 20.10 p.m. and will be broadcast live by Czech Television on the CT1 channel from Rudolfinum in Prague. The evening will be hosted by Marek Eben.

Altogether 195 film professionals were voting about the nominations for the 31st Czech Lion annual awards and they were assessing 33 feature actors’ films, 15 documentary features that had been shortlisted by the preselection committee consisting of the members of the academy out of the total number of 31 documentary features, 8 animated films and also 10 short films that had been shortlisted by another committee of academics  from the total of 18 enrolled short films. Furthermore, the academics were assessing 6 television films and miniseries and 14 series that had been released either on television screens or on the Internet. The voting had been taking place from 1st Dec 2023 to 7th January 2024. The academics attributed altogether 15 nominations to the drama by Tomáš Mašín called Brothers, which tells one of the greatest stories of the cold war – the story of the Mašín brothers, who had decided to leave communist Czechoslovakia with arms in their hands. 12 nominations were given by the academics to the epic detective drama from the thirties in Czechoslovakia called We Have Never Been Modern directed by Matěj Chlupáček. In this film the life in a modern first republic town gets turned upside down by a mysterious and horrible finding. The feature film debut of Robert Hloz called Restore Point is a sci-fi thriller asking the question if technology can provide us with a better life and the academics gave it 8 nominations. The black comedy She Came at Night directed by Tomáš Pavlíček and Jan Vejnar enters the competition for the lion statuettes with the same number of nominations. This film is about a couple in their thirties whose quiet life has been disturbed by the invasion of one of their mothers. The director Tomáš Mašín has been successful once more and his psychological film with a criminal plot called Suppressed got seven nominations. Seven nominations went also to the tragicomedy Waltzing Matilda directed by Petr Slavík. The television miniseries directed by Jan Pachl called Volga obtained six nominations.

In the category of the best feature actors’ film of the year 2023 the Czech Lion can be awarded to these films: Brothers (directed by Tomáš Mašín, producer Petr Bílek), Suppressed (directed by Tomáš Mašín, producer Jiří Tuček), She Came at Night (directed by Tomáš Pavlíček, Jan Vejnar, producers Eva Pavlíčková, Pavel Vácha, Tomáš Pavlíček, Jan Vejnar, Šimon Dvořáček), Waltzing Matilda (directed by Petr Slavík, producer Nataša Slavíková), We Have Never Been Modern (directed by Matěj Chlupáček, producers Maja Hamplová, Matěj Chlupáček).
